The year is 1859 and James Buchanan is president. Slavery, illegal in Ohio due to the Northwest Ordinance, is practiced throughout the south. To better understand the role played by Ohio in the Underground Railroad, students will observe and interview villagers and identify the secret “conductor”. Available on select dates in March and April.

This program is tailored for students in grades 11 & 12, as well as International Baccalaureate (I.B.) students taking the Theory of Knowledge course.
Using material from the Ohio History Center Archives/Library, students will dig deeper and use a variety of primary sources and secondary sources to investigate topics related to this year’s History Day theme, Turning Points in History. Topics may include the Northwest Territory, Women's Suffrage and the Cuyahoga River Fire of 1969.
Your first task as a History Detective is to think carefully about what a "turning point” is. Consider how turning points can be social, cultural, political or economic. As you look at the sources, use your detective skills to answer questions like: What was the world like before and after the turning point? What impact did the turning point have on history?
