Poindexter Village will become a museum. The Ohio History Connection purchased the remaining buildings from the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority. With help from the James Preston Poindexter Foundation, the site will be turned into a museum and cultural learning center.
The Poindexter Village Museum and Cultural Center will showcase the rich untold story of an African American experience in its neighborhood and beyond in order to nurture, understanding, inspire success, inform action and empower future generations to build the strong, vibrant and just community they want to live in.
Poindexter Village was named in honor of Columbus, Ohio, community leader, Rev. James Poindexter. The village was dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt on Oct. 12, 1940 as one of the nation’s first public housing projects. This community represents the birth and history of public housing in this country and reflects Ohio’s place in the national story of the Great Migration.
